Beacon Bay 'accident' was a BP drill

An accident scene that shocked East Londoners yesterday was nothing more than a drill to test and check capacity.

Yesterday on the N2 near Beacon Bay Crossing, fears of an oil spillage were sparked after a BP truck was thought to have been in an "accident" with Toyota Corolla sedan. The simulation had a scenario of four casualties and an oil spillage.

BP's health, safety and environmental advisor Tebogo Phakedi said their emergency response plan had been activated.

"We had our spill cleanup contractor - Spill Tech - on site to contain and maintain the spill to ensure it does not reach sensitive environments nearby, like the Nahoon River because the scenario was that of fuel leaking from the truck compartment," Phakedi said.

Traffic was redirected into Beacon Bay away from the N2 highway.

Naven Naicker, BP's deputy on scene commander, said they conduct one live exercise every two years and a desktop exercise once each year.

"BCM's disaster management, traffic and fire department responded swiftly.  All in all, the exercise went well," he said.

BCM's Joe Khumalo said they succeeded in checking their capacity and abilities as the metro to deal with such emergencies.
