Bhisho has embarked on a recruitment drive for 338 teachers to handle critical subjects at more than 200 schools.

The provincial education department placed a notice in the Daily Dispatch yesterday calling on unemployed teachers to apply before September 18.

However, principals yesterday revealed that some of the posts at their schools were already filled through transfers, which was creating confusion because it seemed these were newly budgeted posts.

Some of the transfers were a result of government’s process of moving teachers to schools where there was considered the greatest need.

Eastern Cape education spokesman Malibongwe Mtima said the department wanted to ensure there were teachers in classrooms and that there was an improvement in performance of schools and results.

The advertised posts are for teachers for maths, science and accounting, among others.

East London’s Crewe Primary principal Peter Beeby said the school was expecting teachers for the foundation and intermediate phases – “state-funded posts”.

Butterworth’s Macibe Senior Secondary principal Phumzile Phuphuma said the school was expecting teachers for maths and science. “Teachers for these subjects left in June so we didn’t have problems with at the beginning of the year.”

Phuphuma said a teacher for agriculture and life sciences had already been placed, as a result of the government process of moving teachers to where they were most needed.

Queenstown’s Luvuyo Lerumo High School principal Simphiwe Tyilana also said they had teachers placed at the school.

He said he was awaiting for the process to be finalised because the transfers had already been approved by the respective districts. — msindisif@dispatch.co.za
