Makana mayor Nomhle Gaga has quit after just 11 days in the hot seat.

Her resignation comes in the face of a DA’s court challenge to her election by a show of hands on August 28.

DA leader in the Makana council Les Reynolds said former ANC speaker Rachel Madinda-Isaac had ignored acting municipal manager Riana Meiring’s advice that the Municipal Structures Act required a secret ballot.

The DA walked out when the speaker refused to adhere to Meiring’s advice.

The application to have Gaga’s appointment declared unlawful and set aside was due to be argued in the Grahamstown High Court today.

In her letter of resignation, Gaga admits she decided to step down in the face of the challenge and her resignation would facilitate the process of properly re-electing a mayor.

Reynolds yesterday welcomed her resignation. He confirmed the election would now take place tomorrow.
