Youthful romance finds favour on new album

Budding vocalist and songwriter Azola Ntshingwa was just 13 when she wrote Stuck in your love and today it features on the newly released Pieces of Me album by internationally renowned DJ Black Coffee.

The 22-year-old Ntshingwa, originally from Keiskammahoek but now living in Johannesburg, is finally making a name for herself. Not only has her song made it to the album, but she also sings.

“I wrote the song back when I was still in Grade 7. It was inspired by a boy I liked.

“The story is about how he knows that I like him but plays hard to get and just does not make time for me. But in the end that does not change how I feel, and just like the title suggests I stay stuck with my feelings,” said Ntshingwa.

She said she had always known that she wanted to sing and described herself as a “typical choir girl”.

“I was always in the choirs, in church and at school. In fact I still sing in church and at weddings. I love music, especially songwriting and performing.”

The former Clarendon High School for Girls matriculant said after reworking and rewriting the song over the years, she decided to approach Mthatha-born Black Coffee because she knew the sound would be appealing to him.

“A couple of years ago when I was still in high school I used to do holiday work at Ugu Radio Station in Port Shepstone so through that I had access to their database, which had a lot of contact details for some of the country’s top musicians.

“Last year I got Black Coffee’s details and I sent him a voice note of the song and within an hour he replied. He loved the song and wanted to do a full recording,” she said.

She said they finally met him in March this year and recorded the track at Black Coffee’s studio Soulistic Music.

“It was such an amazing experience. I learnt so much from him.

“As a result I feel like because I have started my career with an artist of such a high calibre I can only go international from here,” said Ntshingwa, adding that since Black Coffee’s album was released last week things were looking up for her.

She feels she has a pro-mising career in music.

“I cannot reveal much right now because things have not been finalised but I will soon be recording with some really popular international DJ’s, so watch this space,” she said. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
