All is set for a family affair at the Orient Beach tomorrow when thousands of East London residents take part in the annual Daily Dispatch Windmill Family Fun Run/Walk.

The fun run is in its 37th year and will see locals, corporate companies and even patients and staff of Life Rehabilitation Unit take on either the 4km or 8km route.

Spokesman for the South Africa Weather Service in Port Elizabeth, Garth Sampson, said clear skies were forecast.

“The weather will be fine, clear and sunny with temperatures expected at 25°C although a little bit of rain and thundershowers are expected late Sunday evening.”

Life Hospital manager Laro Fourie said the event was one patients looked forward to.

“We have found that people who have been disabled and are able to complete a 4km fun run/walk feel a sense of achievement and are able to testify to how far they have come in their recovery.

“They are also motivated to carry on with their physical therapy and to achieve more.”

The Esplanade will come alive with entertainment from the George Randall marimba band and drummers.

Children will be treated to jumping castles, mini obstacle courses, face painting and there will be cartoon characters along the routes.

Registration, which started yesterday, continues today from 9am to 1pm at the entrance to the Orient Pools.

Tickets cost R60 for adults running/walking the 8km route and R50 for 4km.

For the under 16s the cost is R30 and R40 respectively.

On registration each entrant will receive a free T-shirt, which will not be available tomorrow.

The race starts at 9am.

The Esplanade will be closed from George Walker Parade up to Moore Street from 6am to 11am. Link Road will be closed off from Moore Street up to John Bailie Road.

All proceeds this year go to the Loaves & Fishes Network, which supports 26 educare centres and 1500 children in the Buffalo City Metro.

Daily Dispatch marketing manager Suren Packery said they had been moved by the work the organisation did in the community.

General manager of the network, Pateka Mtintsilana, the winner of the social entrepreneurial category of the Business Women’s Association Regional Business Achiever’s Awards – to which the Daily Dispatch is media partner – said the funding would benefit the organisation immensely.

“We try to make the environment comfortable so that they can learn to be children again. We build an environment conducive to learning.” — mbalit@dispatch.co.za
