Social Development MEC Nancy Sihlwayi visited 10 underprivileged families in Vergenoeg, Egoli, East Bank and Buffalo Flats today where she donated  groceries to the families.

Sihlwayi said the area was a targeted by criminals and had a high rate of drug and alcohol abuse.

"As government, we cannot be in halls speaking to the community at large. We need to do home visits and get into the homes of our people so we can see how they are living and what their needs are.

"We are supplying groceries in this area particularly because it is where the youth most abuse their parents' social grants and steal it to support their drug habits."

Sihlwayi said the visits were also an opportunity to engage with young people about their future.

One of the beneficiaries, Nombulelo Ginger - an unemployed mother of two - said she was excited and very grateful for the groceries.
