Even South Africa’s power utility got caught up in the hype surrounding Trevor Noah’s debut on The Daily Show.

“Eskom’s risk of load shedding today remains low‚” ?@Eskom–SA tweeted on Tuesday‚ before adding‚ “extending #TrevorDay to today and #PoweringYourWorld @Trevornoah”.

Although most local fans couldn’t watch the comedian’s much-anticipated maiden performance live‚ reaction to clips broadcast on the Internet seem to approve of his performance.

@Dudesky01 tweeted: “The Daily Show Trevor was amazing thus far‚ can’t wait to see the full show. Happy Trevor Day South Africa! :D”

?@JohnRee37589921 2m2 minutes agreed: “Trevor Noah absolutely killed it”.

@Clever–Tricks was‚ however‚ not impressed: “Trevor Noah seemed nervous on the #DailyShow. Mispronounced words & less funny than others on the show. Interview w Kevin Hart felt forced.”

The Sunday Times’ Pearl Boshomane wrote: “The verdict? Noah was a dream. At least in the show’s first 11 minutes (that’s all we’ve managed to watch)‚ Noah endeared himself to the live audience and to viewers.”

The Guardian‚ while generally giving Noah the thumbs-up‚ wasn’t as charitable.

“The Daily Show: Trevor Noah clears first night hurdles as host – but only just‚” it headlined its review.

“The Jon Stewart replacement marks his first night behind the desk with some groan-worthy jokes and an awful interview‚ saved by flashes of inspiration.”

The “awful interview” was with comedian Kevin Hart – who is due to tour South Africa soon – and the Guardian described it as “toothless and unironic interview”.

“(Noah’s questions for Hart were such softballs that they may as well have been made out of cotton candy‚ inflated with helium‚ and let loose on a spring breeze‚” it wrote.
