Youngsters sing for all they’re worth

Some of the two-year-olds who competed in a choir competition at the Orient Theatre could barely make it up the stairs of the stage, but that did not stop them from singing with joy and confidence yesterday.

“I am very impressed with the children,” said Hlobo. “The juniors had a complicated song and some of them are very young, but most of them concentrated. The children are also very neat and neatness is important.”

Board member Gloria Memani explained that the organisation is divided into “forums” or areas such as Mdantsane, Scenery Park, Alice and Mooiplaas.

Principals of all the daycare centres were given the song choices in July and their children were taught to sing them.

A choir was then formed of children from every school in the area.

“The forums decide what uniform is the best one for them,” said Memani.

Last year’s winning choir came from Scenery Park and their children once again stood out in their gleaming green and white ensembles.

The area’s senior choir nailed all the choreographed actions to The Bell is Ringing, a skill not mastered by all entrants.

Parents and teachers held their cellphone cameras aloft to capture the charming recitals, while those who had completed their songs were shushed to silence in advance of each performance.

The competition is to be renamed Sidibene Ngomtwana (we are together for children) because daycare centres from the wider Amathole district municipality will also participate next year. — barbarah@dispatch.co.za
