Video shows how flag woman was killed in Gonubie

A graphic video which appeared briefly on Facebook yesterday shows how a flag lady on the Gonubie Main Road construction works was killed when a concrete mixer truck reversed into her.

In the video it appears the woman was unaware of the truck’s approach in the incident, which happened on Monday just before 9am.

Identified as Nokuzola Magaqa, 54, she was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

In the video, the truck is seen reversing towards her.

Magaqa is seen standing some distance behind the truck on the construction lane that goes into Gonubie with her back towards the truck.

She is waving a flag directing oncoming traffic as the concrete mixer truck reverses into her and she falls on the ground before the truck goes over her.

While the sounds of cars passing on the road can be heard on the video, there is no sound of the truck’s reverse alarm beeping as it reverses.

The video appeared to have been removed a few hours later and the source of the footage could not be established.

The construction company behind the R150-million Buffalo City Metro Gonubie Main Road upgrade, Basil Read construction, yesterday said they were unable to comment on the incident as an investigation was in progress.

In a statement by investor relations manager at Basil Read, Jenny von Ehrenberg, the company said it was “devastated by the accident”.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to each and every person affected by this accident,” she said.

Von Ehrenberg said the company could not comment on the cause of the accident at this stage.

“Authorities are on the scene conducting the necessary investigations, and we will provide our full cooperation in this regard,” she said.

The Department of Labour confirmed an inspector was conducting an investigation on the matter.

A case of culpable homicide docket was opened by the police who confirmed Magaqa’s family was informed of her death.

Members of the Gonubie Main Road Facebook group offered their condolences to Magaqa’s family and colleagues, and have started a fund to help towards Magaqa’s funeral. — arethal@dispatch.co.za
