Protesting students tell Mantashe to “voetsek”

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe was booed by thousands of students outside the ANC headquarters this afternoon when he began to walk away without accepting a memorandum in the #FeesMustFall campaign.Objecting to being kept waiting while students chanted and sang‚ Mantashe told them to “voetsek”.

After the jeering‚ Mantashe decided to stay. Students are still in full voice. “We want free education‚” one of the student leaders said.

The students had crossed into town from the Braamfontein campus of Wits University over the Nelson Mandela Bridge. The march was peaceful.

Students earlier booed President Jacob Zuma as a truck with his image and the message ‘Together we move South Africa forward’ moved past the seated crowd outside the ANC headquarters.

“We are not a lost generation‚ we have found what to fight for‚” a student leader said.
