Mthatha police have called for the public to help them track down the killer of an unidentified Mqanduli teacher found shot dead in his car yesterday morning.

The 49-year-old school teacher had several bullet wounds.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the teacher, from Mthatha but employed in Mqanduli, was found by police at about 8am yesterday.

The victim’s name has not been released on request of his immediate family.

“Some members of the public said they saw the car parked there at about 9pm on Tuesday but did not suspect foul play until it was still parked there and people saw the body.”

Fatyela said police received a call yesterday morning that a car had been parked on the side of the road near the borders of Maqhingeni and Vidgiesville villages.

“On investigation police found the body inside the car with multiple bullet wounds in the upper body.”

The body was in the driver’s seat but had slumped over onto the passenger seat. The key was still in the ignition and it appeared nothing had been removed or stolen.

“His cell phone was still there. His wallet and the car keys were still there. This left us baffled as to what was the exact motive of the killing. what we can see, it was not a robbery and not a hijacking,” said Fatyela.

A case of murder was opened with the Mthatha Central Police Station. No arrests have been made. “We urge members of the public to please come forward to assist police in arresting the killer or killers and to prevent them from committing other crimes,” said Fatyela.

When the Daily Dispatch arrived at the scene yesterday, church leaders, teachers and neighbours were saying a short prayer before the body was loaded into a forensic pathology unit van destined for the Mthatha government morgue.

Police experts were still busy lifting fingerprints and gathering other forensic evidence from the scene.

Those gathered called for a speedy arrest, saying they had been robbed of a good community leader and teacher.

Fatyela said police collected three cartridges fired from a .32 revolver at the scene. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
