The best schools cricketers in the country will be gearing up for the various national weeks getting under way next month.

East London is one of the lucky venues who will play host to this prodigious talent as the top U15 cricketers from across the country come down to battle it out for supremacy at the Cricket South Africa U15 Cricket Week.

A whole host of venues around the city will be used for the matches, with the final being played at Buffalo Park on the last day.

“We have already made massive strides in getting ourselves ready to host this week and all will be in place well before the teams arrive,” said Border Schools Cricket coordinator Loyiso Sibaca.

“It has been quite some time since we have hosted a schools cricket event such as this one and it is very good for us to have it back as it will help keep interest in the sport amongst school kids high.”

The competition takes place from December 10-14 and will see around 15 teams and 300 cricketers competing across the city over that period.

The provisional Border teams to take on the different weeks were officially named on Tuesday afternoon.

Four teams of 13 players each have been named, with 12 selected for the U13 team with the 13th player still to be named.

In all 65 players will take on the boys U13, U15, U17 and U19 Coke Week as well as the U19 girls Week next month.

“What we did was that we monitored players between January and March thiyear, and then again monitored the players when cricket started again in September and from that we selected our teams,” said Sibaca.

“All the school stars and players who performed well over the season have been included in the teams and these are the best the Border has to offer.”

There will be high hopes for a number of the teams as they compete in the various tournaments and Border will be hoping for a solid showing from across the board from all their teams.

“We have a very talented group of U19 boys this year, but they are all very young players, playing in the best schools division, so we are aiming for this to be a building year for them,” said Sibaca.

“Our U19 girls always perform very well and three of them are already in the provincial set-up so they should do well.”

With Border hosting the U15 Week interest will be especially high in how the local team does and Sibaca has high hopes for the team.

“Our U15 side is very good and we believe that they can be one of the stars of the tournament,” said Sibaca.

“We also have a good U13 team and will be watching their progress with much interest.”

The U13 Week will be held in Johannesburg over the same period as the U15 Week.

The U17 Week and the girls U19 Week will be held Pietermaritzburg and Durban respectively and both will run from December 11-15.

The Coca-Cola Khaya Majola U19 Week will take place in Port Elizabeth from December 16-20.
