An unemployed young mother from Mdantsane lost R11300 after she w as duped into believing she would be employed at the Department of Justice.

Bahle Dlokweni from NU3 said she had jumped at the opportunity when she heard, through a relative, that the department was hiring

Dlokweni was contacted by a woman who claimed to work for the department in Bhisho and told her that, if she paid R3000, she would get a job in the “administration department”.

“She said I should pay R1500 to get the job and that I would pay the rest once I got paid.

“I deposited the money into an FNB account and faxed my documents to three different fax numbers provided to me by this woman,” Dlokweni explained, adding she knew what she was doing was illegal but was desperate for work.

“I was ready to sign a contract but then they told me that I had to pay R1500 more as the admin job had already gone to someone else. She promised me another one in the “finance section” and I deposited the money,” she said.

More was later demanded from her including money for a laptop and transport costs of a person to teach her the job.

“Everytime I deposited money to them they sounded promising and even when I asked questions they had answers. They even dared me to go to the police if I thought I was being scammed.

“On the day I was told to report to work in Bhisho the lady did not show up despite calls and texts and I decided to go home,” Dlokweni said.

Reality hit home when the suspects demanded yet another R5000.

She said there were at least two women and one man involved in the scam.

Dlokweni reported the matter to police but said she was not happy with the progress of investigations.

Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi confirmed Dlokweni had reported the matter to police but said a case had not been opened.

He suggested she take it up with the Vulindlela station commander where she had reported the matter.

He warned members of the public to be vigilant as “government jobs are not for sale”.

FNB corporate communications manager Dumezulu Shiburi said the matter was being handled by police and the bank was not at liberty to disclose any details.

“Once our internal investigation has been completed the affected party will be notified. None of the suspects are employed by FNB,” Shiburi said.

The Department of Justice had not responded to questions at the time of writing.
