Two years in jail for taking a R250 bribe

A Buffalo City Metro police officer was jailed for two years for accepting a R250 bribe.

The money was paid to constable Christopher Adams by a man he was arresting, allegedly for possessing dagga. Adams, 37, was also convicted of defeating the administration of justice. He had pleaded not guilty to both charges.

He and his colleague, Bradley Naidu, had told Keegan Moodley, whom they were arresting on suspicion of possessing dagga, that they could make the charge go away.

Naidu, 28, was fined R1000 or 12 months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to defeating the administration of justice.

The incident occurred in March last year while the pair were on patrol in the picnic area near the Batting Bridge in Beacon Bay.

During their patrol, they found a small amount of dagga in Moodley’s vehicle.

They told Moodley dagga possession was “a very serious offence” and that he was in “big trouble”, including facing the prospect of going to jail.

Adams had told Moodley that he could make the charge “disappear”. While he was being taken to the police station, Moodley paid R250 to Adams to avoid being charged.

After receiving the bribe payment, the two also confiscated the dagga itself.
