While most political parties welcomed Police Minister Nathi Nhleko’s damning report on suspended national commissioner Riah Phiyega‚ the Council for the Advancement of South African Constitution (Casac) yesterday took a different line.

It wants President Jacob Zuma to fire Nhleko‚ saying a parliament portfolio committee investigation showed a “shocking lack of political oversight over the SAPS”.

Nhleko on Wednesday released the findings of a Ministerial Reference Group (MRG) probe which found Phiyega guilty of perjury‚ misconduct‚ fraud and misleading parliament.

Casac seemed more concerned about the portfolio committee’s “damning report on some of the most senior officials” and a media statement issued “to demonstrate their support for the national commissioner who was facing an inquiry into her fitness to hold office”.

“The portfolio committee found that senior SAPS managers sought to undermine the process initiated by Zuma to institute the inquiry into Phiyega’s fitness to hold office‚ and that they subsequently lied to the portfolio committee‚” Casac said.

The committee recommended disciplinary action be taken against several deputy national‚ provincial and divisional commissioners and the head of corporate communications as well as the national commissioner.

The DA yesterday said it wanted the Farlam Commission-recommended inquiry into Phiyega’s fitness to hold office widened to include claims of her impropriety.

The party’s shadow police minister Zakhele Mbhele said this was necessary given the damning findings of the MRG.
