Molefe: We plan to meet electricity demand 100%

Parliament on Sunday said it “is committed to continuing discussion with the National Education‚ Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) to resolve the impasse which has seen the union embark on an illegal strike last week”.

The precinct of the legislature was besieged by protesters following a “disagreement” over how performance bonuses are calculated‚ a statement said.

Nehawu wants the bonus worked out using the total annual package of workers‚ but Parliament said that this proposal is “unbudgeted for and unaffordable for Parliament given the shoestring budget we are managing”.

“Parliament believes that both parties must commit to the deliberations on finding a resolution‚” the statement said.

“The perspective that the union must demand and management must deliver is based on a win-lose mentality. In this instance it provides an unhelpful approach that the union must demand and management on its own must provide a solution.

“The union needs to be part of creating a workable solution to this problem given their culpability in changing the substantive agreement.”

Parliament also took issue with “reports that allege Nehawu does not want to continue discussion with management on the issues it raised opting instead to engage with…the executive authority of Parliament”.

“The recognition agreement is clear that negotiations occur between union and management. Therefore‚ seeking to negotiate directly with executive authority would in effect be to collapse our current recognition agreement‚” it said.
