Gospel musos grab glory at national event

The Eastern Cape collected four awards at the 8th Annual SABC Crown Gospel Awards at the ICC Durban Arena on Sunday night.Mount Fletcher-born Butho Vuthela won the best traditional gospel album category while Mthatha’s Lusanda Mcinga won best female gospel artist.

This year, Crown Gospel Awards also introduced a new category. The Salt Award recognises work by individuals who are committed to helping others.

Pastor André Roebert of East London-based River Ministries walked away with the honours.

Vuthela, who claimed his fifth award this year, said he was so excited that he was at a loss for words.

“It’s really amazing when you see your work being celebrated on a national level, and you get so humbled when industry legends come up to you and show you their support, it means that we are doing something right.

“I was a bit unsure about my chances because I was competing in that category with some really big names. This award encourages me to keep doing good work because clearly the Eastern Cape produces quality music which heals and speaks to the people,” said Vuthela.

Mount Ayliff-born Mdumiseni Nzimande, popularly known as Dumi Mkokstad, won the song of the year category for Safa Naye.

Mkokstad took this award back in 2013 for his song Mbize uJehovah, while Bethusile Mcinga’s Uzundithwale took the award last year.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Mkokstad, who received a total of 100000 votes, said he was grateful to God and to his fans.

“The support has been far beyond what I could have even hoped for and not just from fans but from my fellow artists. It really means a lot to me,” said Mkokstad.

Sport, recreation, arts and culture MEC Pemmy Majodina said the awards were proof of what she has always believed, that the Eastern Cape is the “home of legends” and that this said a lot about the calibre of talent coming out of the province.
