Parliament set for another day of protest

Parliament is set for another day of gridlock, protest and possible violence today, with members of the National Health, Education and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) promising "to make parliament ungovernable".

The union is unhappy about wage and salary issues, and about the securitisation of Parliament under the new secretary to parliament, Gengezi Mgidlana. Talks on these issues between the union and parliament gridlocked again yesterday.

"Today, we will make parliament ungovernable. Anything can happen," red-clad union Nehawu members said this morningt, before they went into a union meeting in the Old Assembly Chamber.

Last week, chaos ensued when parliamentary portfolio committee meetings were disrupted and a sitting of parliament had to be postponed.

Today, a full programme of parliamentary supplementary budget reviews had to be debated from 11 am, but that seems unlikely to happen.
