Striking BCM worker killed

A Mdantsane family is still in shock after their loved one – a municipal worker – was killed by his superior during a strike.

Mbidlana died at Frere Hospital at 8.45pm that same day.

His family live in a four-roomed RDP house in Mdantsane NU6. Thembisa said she rushed to Frere when she got the call saying he was involved in an accident.

“When I got to the hospital, the nurses prevented me from seeing him as he was critical.

“I later received another call on Friday night saying he was no more,” Thembisa said.

Cambridge police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said Bucholz arrived at the station to report what had happened.

While a policewoman was taking down his statement, Bucholz collapsed. He was also rushed to hospital.

“A case of murder has been opened and the manager will be arrested as soon as he is discharged from the health facility,” Mbi said.

Bucholz’s son, Heydon, said yesterday the family would not be making a statement.

The metro said yesterday that affected workers who witnessed the tragic incident would be offered counselling. BCM spokesman Keith Ngesi said the incident was being investigated internally.

Ngesi said deputy mayor Xola Pakati would visit the scene of the accident and later visit Mbidlana’s widow and children.

Ndlela explained that workers had not been consulted when the clocking system was changed.

Mbidlana was described as a God-fearing man who was loved by his community. He had been with BCM for 10 years. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
