Man dies after being hit by car, dragged by second

In  a horrific late night accident, a man died allegedly after being hit by one car and then dragged by another for more than 300m along Bonza Bay Road in East London.

East London police are investigating the accident, which happened in the early hours of Thursday.

The unknown victim believed to be a homeless man between 40 and 45 years of age, had been walking along Bonza Bay Road near the Caltex Garage when a vehicle knocked him over.

East London police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana, said the driver of the vehicle did not stop to help, and petrol attendants saw him fleeing the scene.

They did not see the make or colour of the vehicle.

Tana said the accident occurred at 2am at the traffic circle at the intersection of Bonza Bay Road and Edge Road.

The injured man was left lying in the road when another car – a Hyundai – rode over him and then dragged the body for a distance of about 350m.

The man was declared dead on the scene.

“Witnesses told police they heard a bang and saw two vehicles driving away from the scene where the pedestrian fell.”

Tana said the driver of the Hyundai knew he had something under his car but thought it was an object like “wood or a refuse bag”.

“He only stopped after he was told to do so by eyewitnesses,” Tana said.

A business manager in the area said the driver of the Hyundai was alerted to the body under his car by a motorist who had been driving behind him.

The driver flashed his lights and hooted to get his attention.

Both cars came to a standstill at the traffic lights in Shibden Drive near The Hub complex .

“Police urge anyone who saw the incident happen to come forward with information that can help find the vehicle that initially hit the deceased,” Tana said. The identity of the victim is not yet known.

Tana said no one had been reported missing to the police in the last 48 hours.

Tana said anyone with information about the accident could contact investigating officer Sergeant Damon Marinschek at Beacon Bay police on (043) 701-9017 and all information would be treated as confidential.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened for investigation, Tana said.

Alderson Ambulance operations manager Jason Leicester said their ambulance crews came across the scene, but the man had already died unfortunately. — zwangam@dispatch. co.za
