Berlin November an event to remember

Thousands of horse racing followers and lovers of lifestyle events descended on Berlin from across the country at the weekend.

The Berlin race course was a hive of activity from dawn on Saturday, as organisers made final preparations for the Eastern Cape’s flagship horse racing event, the second annual Berlin November traditional horse racing extravaganza.

At the start of the event, attendees looked dazzling in colourful outfits – many of them traditional with a modern touch. Stylish MEC for sport, recreation, arts and culture, Pemmy “DJ Pemza” Majodina stood out in a red and black outfit resembling the strip of a jockey.

This year’s edition saw more than 7000 revellers wining and dining with the who’s who of South Africa’s entertainment industry, including Generations actresses Asanda Foji and Thulisile Phongolo, who were both dressed to the nines.

What would horse racing be without fashion, music and fancy cars to grace an event? Berlin November had those in abundance.

Models in scintillating garments from local designer Busi Nodada dazzled fashion lovers. Automobile fans were awed by one of the world’s most sought-after cars, a Rolls Royce, parked near the VIP marquees.

Also in attendance were some of the province’s leading business figures, including construction mogul Siyabulela Moko. These powerful individuals were complemented by politicians such as rural development MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane, finance MEC Sakhumzi Somyo and several provincial HoDs, all showing their colourful and fun-loving side.

Performances by national artists began at sunset. Khuli Chana and Maggz & Moozlie were some of the national acts that kept many dancing until the early hours. They were joined by local performers such as Yoba Unltd in the music festival section of the extravaganza.

Berlin November CEO Luthando Bara was thrilled by the success of the event. “Really, the praise should go to the people on the ground who did all the hard work, but most importantly the people and government of this province for their heartwarming support,” he said.

“At Berlin November we had people from across the social strata from all over the country. But, above all, what gives me a peaceful night’s sleep is to realise that the event creates opportunities for many small business owners, who showcased and sold their work at Berlin November, and made income that makes their businesses more viable.”

Bara promised that next year’s edition would be even bigger and better as Berlin November was pushing to be among the signature lifestyle events engraved on the national entertainment and lifestyle calendar.
