Mdantsane police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property and contravening the explosives act after an ATM was blown up early yesterday morning.
Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said the incident happened in Mdantsane’s Zone 14 in the early hours of the morning.
“We can confirm the incident but no money was taken from the ATM and no one was reported as injured in the incident,” said Mbi.
Lindile Mawe said he had gone to use the ATM when he saw it damaged.
“I noticed that it was violently opened and a friend told me that someone blew it open,” said Mawe.
The Standard Bank ATM is attached to Hlongwane Supermarket. No visible damage was done to the shop.
Nearby residents said they had heard two explosions in the early hours of the morning.
“The first was like a gunshot but the second one was a bomb, definitely a bomb,” said Mzoleleni Lamla.
Mbi said no arrests had been made and police were busy with their investigations.
