The future of Nelson Mandela Bay DA councillor Knight Mali hangs in the balance as the DA’s national bosses will decide whether or not he should be fired.

Mali had to explain by yesterday afternoon why his membership should not be terminated. This follows a report by the Saturday Dispatch that Mali was working with an ANC councillor to paint the DA’s provincial leader Athol Trollip as a racist.

Mali was also reported to have admitted to being aligned with the ANC.

He has denied this, saying he would take the matter to the press ombudsman.

On Monday, he was served with a letter giving him 48 hours to explain why his membership should not be terminated.

He responded by midday yesterday, disputing the report.

DA provincial disciplinary committee chairman Kevin Mileham said: “Councillor Mali has responded and the matter has now been referred to the federal legal commission for determination. It should be soon.

“Once a decision has been made, it will be sent to the federal executive rubber-stamped.”

Mileham said if Mali’s membership was terminated, he would no longer be a councillor.

The latest action against Mali comes while he is facing internal disciplinary charges for allegedly working with the ANC against the DA.

He was suspended in September.

Trollip said they had decided to take action based on the Saturday Dispatch report, as well as statements made by some that Mali had assisted some retired farm workers to write negative affidavits about Trollip.

“I had this evidence months ago and it formed part of the charges against Mali,” Trollip said.

Mali said he was writing to the Saturday Dispatch and Press Ombudsman to complain about the report.
