All systems go for UDM conference next week

More than 1600 United Democratic Movement delegates are expected to converge on the University of Free State next weekend for the party’s national elective congress.

UDM president Bantu Holomisa is expected to be re-elected to the position.

In an interview with the Daily Dispatch earlier this week, the party’s secretary-general Bongani Msomi said an official announcement of contesting candidates would be announced on the second day of the congress, December 12.

“At this time I am not aware as to who will be contesting because there is a special committee that is handling that. I may be contesting also, so having a vested interest it is not for me to handle and receive those names,” Msomi said.

He said the biggest delegation to the national congress would come from the Eastern Cape, which boasts the party’s biggest membership.

“We are expecting our delegates to depart from their respective areas from , because the congress will start at 9am on .

“We will then address the state of the organisation and also adopt policy documents by the branches of the UDM. We will also discuss plans for the local government elections, as the elections are looming,” Msomi said.

The party will also use the conference to launch its national manifesto for the local government elections, expected to be held in May next year.

The party’s current leadership structure consists of Holomisa as president, Zolisa Lavisa (national chairman), Molefe Mokudutlo (national deputy chairman), Nqabayomzi Kwankwa (deputy secretary-general), and Thandi Nontenja (national treasurer).

In preparation, the UDM in the Amathole district is expected to convene its regional elective congress this weekend at the Walter Sisulu University Butterworth Campus.

The provincial leaders met this week in preparation for the Amathole district conference and to finalise the PEC’s mandate going to the national conference.

UDM provincial secretary Wandile Tsipa last month told the Daily Dispatch that the provincial UDM was at an advanced stage preparing for local government elections.

“UDM programmes are in full swing for the local government elections. We are ready as the elections are projected to be in May,” he said at the time.

Tsipa is also a member of the party’s NEC in his capacity as the provincial secretary. — siphem@dispatch.co.za
