Another EC man shot at Umlazi hostel

AN Eastern Cape man is fighting for his life in a KwaZulu-Natal hospital after he was shot and wounded outside Umlazi’s Glebelands hostel. The victim has not been named and the identity of the hospital where he has been admitted is being kept secret to protect him.

The Thursday morning shooting was confirmed by KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane.

Zwane said yesterday that a provincial task team, public order policing unit members and Umlazi detectives arrested three suspects in connection with the shooting.

He said the suspects were also linked to the murder of a Lusikisiki man, Majola Gobidolo, who was killed on Tuesday morning.

Zwane said the suspects had been charged with attempted murder and would appear in the Umlazi Magistrates Court soon. Thursday’s incident occurred at about 6am, when two men, aged 30 and 48, who live at the Glebelands hostel were travelling in a bakkie to work, when attacked by gunmen.

“The suspects fired a number shots towards them while they were stationary at the traffic lights,” Zwane said.

“The 30-year-old was seriously injured and the other managed to escape unscathed.

“It is believed that the men may be linked to another murder that occurred on December 1, at the Glebelands shopping centre.”

Zwane said the latest victim is the fourth man from the Eastern Cape to be shot at the hostel since mid-November this year.

Three have survived and Gobidolo died on December 1.

Gobidolo was the 54th person to be murdered at the hostel since February last year.

Of the deceased, 44 were from the Eastern Cape.

Three other victims who survived are currently fighting for their lives in KwaZulu-Natal hospitals.
