Girl lucky to survive savage attack by dogs

A young girl stared death in the face as she was being mauled by two vicious dogs at the weekend.

Achuma Jantjies, 13, has more than 30 wounds on her body with two serious ones on her neck from the horrific attack on Friday afternoon.

It happened in Mdantsane’s NU17 while she was walking home with friends.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, a tearful Achuma said the two dogs dragged her down as she tried to climb over a high fence to get away from them.

“They pulled me by my jersey and I couldn’t hold onto anything. I fell and they attacked me and one of them constantly came at my throat. They were dragging me.

“I nearly died there. I don’t know how I survived,” said the Grade 7 pupil.

Mdantsane police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi confirmed the incident. “We can confirm that such an incident did happen in Mdantsane where a 13-year-old was mauled by the dogs but no criminal case has been reported for investigation with the police,” said Mbi.

This was because the girl could not make a statement as she was bleeding excessively and had to be rushed to hospital.

A number of people witnessed the incident but no one could stop the dogs from attacking Achuma. Two people, including the dogs’ owner, who tried to stop them were also attacked.

“People tried to help me but the dogs were vicious. There were brave people who tried to remove them but they were also left injured,” said the victim.

A local doctor, Zikhona Hlalempini, who witnessed the incident, told the Dispatch that a cat that walked past after the attack was mauled to death in seconds by the same dogs.

Achuma’s mother, Neliswa Jantjies, said she was shocked to see her child with blood all over her tiny body.

“She was bleeding profusely. I was scared that I was going to lose her. The doctor at the hospital told us that she sustained more than 30 wounds on her body, including two to the throat and a number of others on her stomach,” said Jantjies.

Jantjies said she wanted the dogs removed from the community. “They have to be removed and put down. We can’t have these dogs because they will kill the next person,” she said.

Yesterday the Dispatch team visited the dog owner’s house but no one was home.
