Eight awaiting trial prisoners who were in the Mthatha High Court stole a police van and escaped from the court this afternoon.
They were about to be transported back to the Mthatha prison when the incident happened.
It is not clear at this point how they got hold of the police car keys.
Police gave chase in another car and the prisoners drove into a cul-de-sac on a gravel road close to the Mthatha sports ground. The prisoners tried to run on foot but, according to police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela, five of them were rearrested. Police are still searching for the other three.
The car they stole has been recovered damaged at the front.
