Electricity protests close off roads

Residents of Buffalo City Metro’s Ward 1 in Duncan Village closed the Mdantsane access road yesterday afternoon, demanding that electricity be restored to their homes.

The residents claim they have been without electricity since the weekend.

By the time a Daily Dispatch team arrived at the scene, residents had already dispersed after police chased them away.

The BCM fire department was busy clearing the main road, which had been closed for about two hours.

Duncan Village resident Nowethu Blaai said the electricity had been restored immediately after the protest.

Last week residents of Mzamomhle Township in Gonubie closed the main road, Gullsway and the township access road protesting for electricity.

BCM said the reason for the blackout had been illegal connections. Staff had been unable to work in that situation. By yesterday afternoon, electricity was restored in Duncan Village.

Late yesterday afternoon residents from Leaches Bay, also protesting electricity problems, barricaded the entrance to the East London airport, temporarily blocking traffic from entering or leaving the facility.

Police were called to control the crowd and, according to police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana, traffic flow into and out of the airport was restored. — bonganif@dispatch.co.za
