President Jacob Zuma bestowed awards on three Eastern Cape citizens posthumously at a glittering event held at the Presidential guest house in Pretoria yesterday.
The three were:
lFort Beaufort-born Mpumelelo Washington Bongco received a gold award of the Order of Mendi for acts of bravery;
A gold award of the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo, which recognises eminent foreign nationals for friendship shown to South Africa, was bestowed posthumously on General Hashim Mbita of Tanzania.
The same award was given to the former prime minister of Canada, Brian Mulroney, for his contribution to the liberation of South Africa.
