Award-winning pop singer Elvis Blue will celebrate Valentine’s Day with an East London crowd on Saturday.

Elvis Blue, real name, Jan Hoogendyk, is the 2010 Idols SA winner. After his big win, the then 30-year-old Blue went on to release a self-titled album and to date has three official albums.

His third album, Afrikaans, released last year saw, him winning the best Afrikaans adult contemporary album at the 2014 South African Music Awards.

Blue also scooped album of the year and best male artist at the Annual Ghoema Afrikaans Music Awards last year.

He performed last year at Boeretroos Theatre as part of his promotional tour for Afrikaans.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch this week ahead of his performance this weekend at the Venue@Hemingways, Blue said he was looking forward to his one-night show.

“I love East London people. They are friendly and I’ve never performed at The Venue before,” he said.

Although he is not on an official tour, Blue said he would be performing in Johannesburg on Friday and would head to Graaff-Reinet after the East London show.

When not doing live performances, Blue said he was recording songs for his new album due to be released in May this year.

“My current album has done well. Besides the awards, it had also done well in terms of sales, especially considering that it was for a slightly different audience,” he said.

Blue said his upcoming album would have songs in English and Afrikaans.

“There is a single out titled Shine. It’s an English song. I don’t think we should limit ourselves to one language as South African musicians,” he said.

Blue said people attending the show on Saturday should expect to hear songs from his debut album to the latest single.

The event starts at 8pm on Saturday. Tickets cost R120 and are available at Computicket.

  • The Daily Dispatch, in partnership with The Venue@Hemingways are giving away two double tickets for a VIP experience.

The winners will get a chance to meet Blue over drinks and snacks before the event. They will also get frontrow seats.
