Drug mule accused in court

Alleged drug mule Elize de Jager of Gonubie made a brief appearance in a Kenyan court yesterday as her East London family expressed concern about her health.

De Jager, 46, pleaded not guilty to trafficking 4.5kg of cocaine from Brazil after her November 22 arrest at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta Airport.

She has been in custody since her arrest.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, De Jager’s sister Antoinette Gerber, also of Gonubie, said she was worried about her health.

She said De Jager, who has battled uterine cancer for years, is currently in the prison hospital with bronchitis.

“My mother is worried she will never see Elize again.”

Drugs, worth about R1.7-million, were allegedly found stashed in De Jager’s luggage, secreted in several roll-on deodorant bottles, other cosmetic containers and shoes.

She was travelling from Brazil on a Kenyan flight to Benin when she was arrested in a joint operation between Kenyan and South African authorities at a stopover in Nairobi.

Yesterday, with her hair swept back in a ponytail and wearing a striped sleeveless top, De Jager asked the court to return two phones and an iPad which were still in possession of the police.

According to eNCA journalist Raphael Ambasu who attended court yesterday, De Jager has changed lawyers and appointed Jones Waka as her new counsel.

The case was postponed to March 5.

De Jager worked as a sales rep for an East London courier company until October last year.

If found guilty, she faces life imprisonment. — barbarah@dispatch.co.za
