The country’s most popular Afro-Soul group, The Soil, chose not to disappoint its Eastern Cape fans rather than to walk the "black carpet" at this year’s Metro Awards.

At the same time as the group were entertaining an enthusiastic crowd in Alice on Saturday night, they were being announced as the winners of two major Metro Music Awards at the Durban’s International Convention Centre.

The group had committed to perform at the Love Letter event early in January, before the nominees of the awards were announced.

At the prestigious awards the band won the best produced album for their Nostalgic Moments album and best duo/ group album award.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday before leaving for Johannesburg, The Soil’s leading lady, Buhlebendalo Mda, said they could not contain their excitement when they found out that they had won not one but two awards.

“At the time we were watching from a B&B in Alice when they announced the first award which was for the best produced album. That category was not on the list and we were shocked. We all looked at each other and were wondering what’s happening,” Mda said.

The band was nominated for the best African pop album and best duo/ group album categories. The best produced album category was one of the special Metro FM categories that was revealed on the night.

Mda said they were feeling very honoured.

“This was the first time that we were nominated for the metros.

“We won because of the people who have supported us and voted for our music,” she said.

The organiser of the Love Letter event where The Soil performed on Saturday, Mavo Jokazi, said they were pleased with the results of the turnout. “We booked The Soil in the first week of January and I am glad they could honour our contract,” he said.

Jokazi said they would go ahead with their plan of making their event an annual thing.

This year’s awards saw the music industry’s stars flocking to the banana city to celebrate greatness.

Eastern Cape singing sensation Zahara won bestselling music download award. However, the double platinum selling, award winning singer was not there to receive her award.

The biggest winner of the night was Cassper Nyovest, whose real name is Refiloe Maele Phoolo. The 24-year-old Mafikeng rapper’s song Doc Shebeleza won him song of the year, best hit single and listener’s choice, and his debut album Tsholofelo won not only best male album but best hip hop album too.

The legendary Tshepo Tshola and the Mahotella Queens won both lifetime achievement awards.

Another prominent award ceremony in the following months is the South African Music Awards. It also celebrates local talent and honours legends. —poliswap@dispatch.co.za
