ANC provincial bosses will be visiting Port Elizabeth this weekend to assess the state of the organisation in the region.

This follows the disbandment of the Nelson Mandela regional executive committee (REC) last year‚ which saw the Chippa Ngcolomba led REC replaced by a Charles Nqakula-led regional task team (RTT).

At the heart of the problems faced by the party in the area were dwindling membership numbers across the metro’s branches.

The final nail in the coffin was when an independent ward candidate‚ who had been recently expelled from the ANC‚ outclassed the ANC’s own candidate during a Ward 42 by-election last November.

Andile Gqabi secured 60.7% of the vote against the ANC candidate’s 36.2%.

A few weeks later‚ ANC President Jacob Zuma‚ along with senior officials from Luthuli House descended on the area and‚ after meeting the party’s provincial‚ regional and branch leaders‚ they decided to dissolve the troubled region.

They then announced that the Nqakula team would take over the running of region. One of the RTT’s responsibilities was to rebuild structures.

The Democratic Alliance is targeting Nelson Mandela Metro as the next metro it will take over after Cape Town.
