Mother‚ daughter arrested after foetus dumped

Police have arrested a 50-year-old mother after she allegedly helped her 25-year-old daughter abort her baby.

Mother and daughter Nombasa and Zizipho Maqebuka appeared in the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court‚ East London‚ on Thursday where they were formally charged with child concealment.

They were released on R300 bail each by presiding magistrate Nolundi Mkwali.

“You must follow strict bail conditions upon your release in that you will present yourself for trial and will not change your physical address without the knowledge of the investigating officer in this case. You must also refrain from intimidating witnesses or interfering with the investigation‚” Mkwali told the accused.

The case was postponed to May 25.

Prosecutor Nontsikelelo Makazi said this would allow police to investigate the matter further and gather all outstanding statements from witnesses.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Nkosikho Mzuku said the abortion was allegedly performed at 2am on Wednesday and the foetus dumped.
