Renegade unions say splinter rumours a ‘fallacy’

THE nine renegade Cosatu unions who have backed former Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi have vowed to fight for the soul of the federation rather than start a new union.

Vavi‚ who was expelled from Cosatu last month‚ addressed about 200 shop stewards belonging to the nine renegade Cosatu-affiliated unions who gave him a hero’s welcome with singing and chants of “Hands off Vavi‚ hands off!“

It was his first engagement with workers since his expulsion from the union.

Irvin Jim‚ who was scheduled to attend‚ was not present.

Andile Mngqaleka‚ regional chair of Satawu‚ said the nine represented a group “trying to unite the federation”.

President of the Food and Allied Workers Union Atwell Nazo said the nine aimed to “claim the federation from those who want to steal it from us”.

He said the unions would fight for Cosatu and rumours that they would form a splinter union were a “fallacy”.

He also vowed that the nine would fight for Vavi using all the laws in the country.

“You can’t dismiss a person without a hearing no matter how drunk you are‚” he said.
