Rapper iFani and alcoholic brand Redds have dismissed claims from musician AKA that the brand bought 20000 copies of iFani’s latest album, which achieved first day gold sales.

The Xhosa rapper released his second album I Believes In Me: Second Quadrant on April 29. Prior to his album release, iFani travelled all over the country encouraging people to pre-order it.

On the day of release, iFani managed to sell more than 20000 copies, earning himself a gold award plaque.

However, his success was short lived when well-known rapper AKA alleged that iFani got Redds to buy 20000 copies.

The allegations sparked a debate which has been raging on Twitter since Tuesday.

AKA tweeted: “If a brand bought 20000 iFani albums, surely I could get someone to buy the remaining 2000 .”

He said people should not be fooled by iFani. “Be on the lookout, iFani and Redds will give you copies of this album. It’s a guarantee.”

Redds dismissed the claims by saying that it supported local talent but did not have any involvement in buying copies of iFani’s album.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, iFani said he was upset at first by AKA’s allegations.

“But after reading tweets from my fans I realised that I had their support and that is all that matters,” he said, adding the allegations made by AKA showed he was doing something right as a musician.

“I’ve never spoken to this guy but my dream had people asking questions all of a sudden. The 1stDayGold campaign started as a dream, I visited so many radio stations, newspapers and malls around the country encouraging people to pre-order and now it is a reality,” he said.

The Port Elizabeth rapper was awarded his gold award for selling more than 20000 copies a day after the album was released.

Redds later announced it would buy 200 copies of iFani’s album. “The album is selling. Thanks to AKA. Redds has purchased 200 copies for real this time.”

Hitting back, iFani offered his support to AKA.

“He must ask me how I did this and I will gladly tell him. For now, I am focussing on my Eastern Cape,” he said.

The popular rapper will kick off his tour on May 30 in Port Elizabeth and is scheduled to spend the month of June doing shows and motivational talks around the province. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
