More than 300 people at Masizithathele informal settlement near Mthatha were left homeless after their homes were bulldozed by the King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality.

The homes were illegally built on a piece of land earmarked for housing development along the banks of the Corhana River.

KSD Municipality spokesman Sonwabo Mampoza the municipality acted after they received a court order from the Supreme Court of Appeal confirming previous court verdicts that the residents must be moved from the land they were occupying.

A large contingent of SAPS and municipal law enforcement monitored the situation as the structures‚ most of which were two-roomed properties‚ were flattened.

There was no violence and residents removed their furniture before the homes were demolished. They have‚ however‚ vowed to rebuild the structures.
