The former deputy mayors of Buffalo City Metro and Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Temba Tinta and Thando “Chippa” Ngcolomba, have been sworn in as members of the provincial legislature (MPL) this week.

Both Tinta and Ngcolomba, who vacated their municipal posts on the ANC’s orders, became the newest members of the legislature during the brief ceremony on Monday morning.

The ceremony was conducted by speaker Noxolo Kiviet. Also present were ANC chief whip Mzoleli Mrara and deputy speaker Bulelwa Tunyiswa.

The two new MPLs replace Alfred Mtsi and Xola Pakati, who both resigned earlier this month to take up positions as BCM’s mayor and deputy.

Tinta was shown the door a fortnight ago after the ruling party ordered him and former mayor Zukiswa Ncitha to resign amid political and administration instability in their council.

Tinta is also one of the senior ANC leaders in BCM facing trial for the alleged embezzlement of municipal funds meant to be used for the transportation of mourners during Nelson Mandela’s memorial and funeral service in December 2013.

Ncitha is expected to be sworn-in this week at the Bhisho Legislature as a member of the National Council of Provinces in the National Assembly.

Ngcolomba’s political woes started in January when the national ANC leaders visited the NMBM region to assess the state of the organisation and discovered dwindling membership numbers.

He was the party’s regional secretary before the regional executive was dissolved and replaced by the Charles Nqakula-led interim regional task team.

Ngcolomba was ordered last month by the ANC to vacate his position together with NMBM’s 83-year-old mayor Ben Fihla, who has since retired from politics.

They were replaced by football administrator Danny Jordaan and ANC activist Bicks Ndoni as the mayor and deputy.

Welcoming Tinta and Ngcolomba to the legislature on Monday, Kiviet told them that being a public representative means they must be prepared to surrender their lives to the people they serve.

“Now you need to tread more carefully to protect the position of responsibility entrusted on you. As members of this noble institution you must carry out your responsibilities to the best of your abilities and we trust that you will add your valuable contribution to the institution,” said Kiviet.

Tinta said his latest deployment meant he was now in a new space.

“I am looking forward to the new challenge of serving the people of the Eastern Cape to the best of my ability.”

Ngcolomba said: “I understand that there is an expectation on me to deliver to my constituency and the people of the province. I intend not to fail them and my organisation.” — asandan@dispatch.co.za
