Midnight quarrel puts man in hospital

An East London man is in hospital after being beaten and stabbed. Now Amalinda homeowner Miles Hendricks, 43, interviewed in hospital, says he wants his three Garth Street neighbours to face charges of attempted murder.

Police said they are investigating the neighbours for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GHB).

Neighbour Ernest Esterhuizen told the Daily Dispatch yesterday that he would prove in court that Hendricks had started the fight when he came charging at them armed with karate sticks.

Esterhuizen said he was shooting at electricity thieves in the bush, but denied he called them k*****s.

Esterhuizen, 54, and his son Gert, 25, were arrested in their home on Monday morning and detained in the Cambridge police station briefly before being released on warning.

The third man is still at large.

Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said the father and son were released after it was found that Esterhuizen had an undisclosed “health problem”.

“They were warned to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where they will face a charge of assault-GBH,” said Mbi.

Hendricks, speaking from his Life St Dominic’s Hospital bed, where he is recovering from a swollen slash wound in the inside of his left arm, said he was attacked around midnight on Saturday after he complained about gunshots coming from the Esterhuizen property.

He said: “I was sleeping when I heard two shots being fired outside. When I came out to investigate I saw three drunk men, one carrying a 38. special long revolver.

“I told them they were making noise and that I was trying to get some sleep as I was working in the morning.”

He said Esterhuizen had then allegedly said he was using the gun to shoot at “k*****s” who were illegally connecting electricity nearby.

“I told him this would result in the unnecessary death of people. Before I could even finish my sentence three men started attacking me,” he said.

He said Esterhuizen pistol-whipped him through the face cutting his cheek, another slashed and stabbed his arm with a bush cutter, while Gert Esterhuizen allegedly punched him with his fists.

He said the attackers also called their bulldog and ordered it to bite him. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
