ANCYL slams mayor’s jaunt

The ANC Youth League in the province has slammed OR Tambo Municipality Mayor Nomakhosazana Meth’s spending of taxpayers’ money on overseas jaunts.

The league has called on the rural municipality’s executive to be “sensitive” to its people and avoid splurging millions on unnecessary trips while people on the ground were suffering in poverty.

“ should be more sensitive to the plight of our people and guard against ... spending more on travelling and hiring cars when poverty and unemployment among young people in particular continues to stubbornly persist,” the ANCYL provincial office said after a provincial executive committee meeting last Friday in East London.

It was reacting to a Daily Dispatch report that exposed how Meth had come under fire yet again for spending R369244 of taxpayers’ money on flights and accommodation to Argentina for herself, her personal assistant and the CEO of Ntinga Agency.

Meth went to Argentina as part of a delegation that accompanied rural development and agrarian reform MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane.

An invoice seen by the Dispatch from a local travel agency showed the cost of the flights and accommodation for Meth and her entourage.

They spent 10 days in Argentina and one night at an East London hotel.

The document shows that Meth and her team flew from East London to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

From there, they travelled to Guarulos International Airport in Sao Paulo, then to Argentina’s Aeroparque International Airport.

The youth league’s criticism comes after Meth came under fire from opposition parties including Cope, UDM and DA councillors.

The councillors lambasted the mayor’s spending on travelling saying Meth should focus on the rural municipality rather than going overseas.

In the past Meth has been criticised for hiring luxury vehicles, using taxpayers money to the tune of R1-million.

In 2014 she travelled to Lusaka to attend 50th Jubilee Celebrations with various politicians and officials. — siphem@dispatch.co.za
