The Daily Dispatch-Windmill Fun Run on Sunday promises to be this year’s most family-oriented race in the city, as sponsors come on board to create a morning of fun-filled entertainment for young and old.

The fun run has been a favourite on the East London social and sporting calendar, with this year’s event expecting to draw more than 3500 people.

Daily Dispatch marketing manager Suren Packery said over the years the race had evolved into a family outing – attracting more and more walkers, families with strollers, as well as wheelchair participants.

“It is a great way for families to get outside and enjoy the morning on the exquisite East London beachfront,” said Packery.

He said entertainment for the day would include dancing cartoon characters, jumping castles, face-painting, live music by Wild Coast FM, drummers, a marimba band, and fun water sprinklers.

All participants receive a share of more than R500000 worth of goodie bag prizes – all family-related vouchers and goods – including product and vouchers from Jumbo, Twizza, Body Classique, Johnson & Johnson, Windmill, Buffalo City Metro, Wimpy, Mugg & Bean, Kat Leisure Group and the East London Aquarium.

Johnson & Johnson has come on board to make the fun run more baby-friendly with their “Baby Zone” changing area.

Michelle Pretorius from Johnson & Johnson said there would be a secure area available for moms to change their babies conveniently and hygienically.

The first hundred moms to use the facilities would receive a free bottle of J&J baby powder.

In keeping the family-centred ethos for the fun run, charity organisation Loaves & Fishes Network has been chosen as this year’s beneficiary.

Entry forms are available at Sportsman’s Warehouse, Total Sports in Vincent, the Dispatch offices in Caxton Street and Spargs.

Registration takes place on September 18 at the Orient Pools from 10am to 6pm and the on September 19 from 9am to 1pm.

There will be no registration on race day. T-shirts and goodie bags will be distributed at registration. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
