Mandela rape case postponed

The relative of Nelson Mandela accused of raping a teenage girl is set to return to court only in November.

The 24-year-old did not appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court as scheduled yesterday because a new date was set after his defence lawyers met with the magistrate.

Magistrate Pieter du Plessis released the man, who may under law not be identified until he has pleaded because of the sexual nature of the charges, on R7000 bail on August 25.

He faces charges of rape, attempted rape and sexual assault after he allegedly assaulted the 15-year-old complainant in an alley outside a restaurant in Greenside, Johannesburg, on August 7.

In his bail application, he admitted he had sex with the girl but said it was consensual. He said he believed she was older than 16.

Shortly after his release on bail, the man’s lawyers applied for changes to the conditions of his bail to allow him to be treated for stress and depression.
