Ex-boxer Luvuyo Zazi awaits rape sentence

Convicted rapist and former professional boxer Luvuyo Zazi will have to wait until December to hear his fate after he raped a teenager five times.

Zazi, 38, pleaded not guilty and claimed the sexual intercourse with the girl had been consensual.

DNA tests linked him to the rape but Zazi maintained that the girl had offered herself to him.

He was convicted last month by Judge Igna Stretch in the East London High Court.

Stretch found that on October 2014, Zazi had sent the 16-year-old girl to a shop to buy goods.

On her return, he told her to put the items inside his shack. He then locked the door, placed a knife to her neck and threatened to kill her.

The girl hit him, the knife fell to the floor, and he then pushed her onto his bed.

He then forced a cloth into her mouth and tied one of her arms to the headboard.

The teenager fought back and Zazi then tied her other arm to the headboard and undressed her.

Before raping her, Zazi smoked drugs from a bottle neck.

He raped her twice more before falling asleep next to her. He raped her twice again the next morning. She only managed to escape in the morning.

The girl initially went to a former Model C school but because of her family’s financial situation she was moved to a township school in Duncan Village.

Zazi described his situation as being “from butter to dust” implying that he had fallen from grace.

Yesterday, correctional services official, Vusumzi Tima, said Zazi had been convicted to 10 years’ imprisonment in 2006 for rape.

“He was released on parole on July 27 2011 but he misbehaved and was taken back into custody. He was given another chance and released again on April 30 2014 but he defaulted again,” Tima said.

Zazi’s attorney Nozuko Marenene told the court her client had been a professional boxer from 1997 to 2005.

“He is unmarried and has three children. The mother of his one child was raped and killed on June 18 2001.” Marenene said she had no exceptional circumstances for a lesser sentence.

Prosecuting state advocate Zukile Mdolomba said Zazi was a perfect candidate for life imprisonment.

“ Up until now he has shown no remorse,” Mdolomba said.

The matter was postponed to December 15 for Stretch to hand down sentence. — siyab@dispatch.co.za
