Afro-jazz singer and guitarist Mavo Solomon will be treating jazz lovers to fine sounds, coupled with local and international tunes at the Velvet Jazz Lounge tonight.

The Queenstown-born vernacular Xhosa singer – who holds a BSc in mathematics and physics and a BSc in mechanical engineering – has performed with the likes of Hugh Masekela, Zwai Bala, Zamajobe and Khaya Mahlangu.

He will be performing in East London for the first time since his music career kicked off in 2006.

His only album, Isigidimi, consists of a variety of songs about love, childhood innocence, family bonds and politics.

“My music is inspired by what I feel and what I have experienced in my life, also touching on topical issues in politics.”

Solomon, who is also a songwriter, has written songs for Zwai Bala, Zola Soul, Nt’abiseng and Dumza Maswana, among others, but was inspired to sing by young producer Erik Paliani.

Shortly thereafter, they produced Solomon’s first album, Isigidimi.

The storytelling musician said East Londoners should expect to be blown away as he pours his heart out.

“My music is very meaningful and intimate to singing and repeating choruses that people cannot relate to,” he said.

Recently, his hit song, Mamelani was No1 on Kaya FM’s jazz chart for six consecutive weeks.

Music lovers have also become accustomed to a Solomon original, Ndize, which has been sung by Zwai Bala.

Velvet Jazz Lounge owner, Alfredo Naidoo, said the first two couples to arrive would get free entry to the show.
