ANC bigwigs send NEC to tackle disputes

ANC bosses in Luthuli House have assigned their national executive committee (NEC) deployees in provinces affected by factional fights to meet branches who lodged disputes, before the party can make a final ruling on the matter.

ANC branches which have officially lodged disputes on outcomes of their respective regional conference outcomes are party members from OR Tambo, Buffalo City and Joe Gqabi regions.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe made the announcement at a press conference in Gauteng earlier this week. Along with the three, he said, were branches from KwaZulu-Natal.

The Dispatch reported on Tuesday that the affected group from BCM already presented its side of the story before the national executive committee last Saturday.

This followed the group’s decision to convene a parallel elective regional conference where they elected a 25 member task team led by seasoned ANC activist Joe Jordaan.

The conference was convened a week after Phumulo Masualle’sprovincial executive committee gave a go a head and officiate another regional elective conference where Xola Pakati was elected as regional chairman.

Mantashe said the ANC was very concerned that factional battles leading to elective conferences have led to members disputing elective conferences results.

And that unhappy members have marched to ANC offices around the country requesting the party head office to nullify the results.

He said the national executive committee (NEC) viewed this as “unfortunate and developing tendency”.

The OR Tambo region, which is the ANC’s second biggest region in the country and the biggest in the Eastern Cape, held its elective conference two months ago.

Later that same month, Joe Gqabi, the smallest region which covers the volatile area of Sterkspruit known for service delivery protest and Alwal North also elected its ANC regional leaders.

Buffalo City also elected its regional leaders last month. Leaders of rival factions which lost the three conferences have been at the forefront of marches against the ANC.

The unhappy ANC members from the three regions have marched to the Eastern Cape provincial ANC headquarters Calata House accusing the provincial executive committee of siding with their rivals in what they view as a campaign to field Mantashe as deputy president, a claim Mantashe has denied several times. — zineg@dispatch.co.za
