The University of Fort Hare (UFH) is calling for applicants for the position of deputy vice-chancellor (DVC) for institutional support.

The post was left vacant after Dr Jabulani Mjwara, who controversially resigned in October, left amid an investigation into the role he played in the university’s building renovations without sanction. He was suspended in May over investigations into R10-million in unauthorised expenditure.

UFH spokeswoman Zintle Filtane said an announcement on the new DVC would be made once the full recruitment process had been completed in the new year.

In an advert placed on the university’s website, UFH said it was looking for a prospective candidate to lead and participate in broad decision-making processes and drive the strategic operational management and leadership of human resources, information and communication technology, properties and services.

The new DVC will report to vice-chancellor Dr Mvuyo Tom.

Other duties include providing strategic advice and support to Tom, promoting the university’s profile, and transformation in line with its ambition to provide a high-quality, international-standard education.

Applicants should have a doctorate (PhD) or equivalent. It would be an added advantage for the candidate to be a chartered accountant or to have obtained a masters in business administration or masters in business leadership. Candidates also need to have substantial executive management and leadership experience in higher education, solid strategic management skills, and resource management, and people management experience. The university requires the candidate to have an excellent knowledge of higher education policy, specifically where the policy advances socioeconomic transformation.

He or she should be “a well-respected leader with exemplary personal qualities of integrity, sound judgment, energy, passion and interpersonal skills who is able to attract and motivate the academic community, students, alumni and external stakeholders in the university’s drive to provide best-practice human resources, operations and information and communication technology-related practices”. The closing date for applications is December 7.
