Plenty of space at Mthatha Airport

The new multimillion-rand terminal building at the Mthatha Airport is up and running, giving travellers a more spacious wait between flights.

Kumbaca could not say which lines showed interest.

Apart from the terminal building, the provincial department of transport is also looking into getting new lights for the runway which will provide sufficient lighting when it is dark and during bad weather.

Currently the lights on the runway do not provide enough light for flights to land at night, causing major delays for passengers when their flights arrive late from Johannesburg.

Kumbaca said the department was busy with the procurement process for the runway lights.

“The procurement process is under way. Companies have submitted bids, and the department is looking into that process.

“It is going through our supply chain processes so that we can get someone who is competent.

“The lights they are offering must be approved by the SA Civil Aviation Authority,” said Kumbaca.

He said the second phase of the Mthatha Airport development included a commercial property development and the turning of it into the logistics hub of the eastern part of the province.

“We are looking at hotels, conference centres and other commercial businesses,” he said. — abongilem@dispatch.co.za
