Girl describes horror of forced prostitution

A teenager forced into prostitution will remember 2010 as the year she spent months without bathing and brushing her teeth and being forced to use a sponge as a sanitary towel.

This was revealed in the East London Regional Court where an alleged pimp is on trial for holding two underage girls as sex slaves. He faces human trafficking charges.

Amajuoyi Chinemere Barthlomew is alleged to have pimped underage girls in East London during the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup.

The state alleges that during May and June 2010 two girls, aged 16 and 15, were sexually offered by Barthlomew to men for compensation.

Yesterday, one of the girls testified she was lured by a man, Emeka Prince Agu, to travel from Gauteng to East London for a party.

She said Barthlomew kept them locked in a house while his girlfriend, Small, guarded them.

Under cross-examination by the defence, the woman was accused of fabricating the story and asked why she did not attempt to run away.

She replied that she was too scared of Barthlomew.

The court heard that Barthlomew took money paid by clients and gave the girls drugs.

One girl was allegedly sold to a man in Oxford Street.

In June 2010, the other teenager – who testified yesterday – escaped.

Police doing routine raids found the girl at a friend’s house and she was taken to a place of safety. The girl who had been sold was also found and taken to a place of safety.

The girls were returned home just after Christmas in 2010.

The trial was postponed to January 14. — siyab@dispatch.co.za
