Water was restored yesterday to a number of villages and suburbs of Buffalo City Metro affected by major water outages over the Christmas weekend.

Relief was felt by thousands from Ilitha, Berlin, Sandile and Mpongo villages, while Zinyoka, some Ncera villages, Welcomehood, Thembisa, Kuni and other areas still had no water.

This followed a closed meeting with the Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane and BCM mayor Alfred Mtsi, cooperative governance and traditional affairs MEC Fikile Xasa and mayors from Eastern Cape district municipalities.

Councillor Vuyani Peter from the Chalumna villages said they were relieved when they opened water taps and saw running water yesterday morning.

“People are very happy … less than five villages still need to be restored out of 28 villages that were affected.

There was little to celebrate in Zinyoka after water has still not been restored yesterday and instead, two additional 10000 litre batches were dispatched to the area.

Ward councillor Siyabonga Skolo said that the metro urgently needed to reconsider its agreement with supplier Amatola Water as the water crisis was not over. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
