Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane was swift to comment on a racist Facebook post that was keeping South African Twitter users busy on Monday morning.
But‚ by joining the online condemnation of estate agent Penny Sparrow calling black people “monkeys”‚ he was labelled by many as hypocritical against the backdrop of the Dianne Kohler Barnard saga late last year.
Sparrow had‚ angered by the presence of black people on beaches‚ posted: “From now I. Shall address the blacks of South Africa as monkeys as I see the cute little wild monkeys do the same pick drop and litter.”
Her post was widely circulated on social media.
Maimane tweeted: “#PennySparrow comments are racist. They are an insult to me and to our party. We have too many of these in SA & we must criminalize these.”
Many found this disingenuous as DA MP Kohler Barnard had in December won an appeal against her party membership being terminated for sharing a Facebook post which praised former apartheid president PW Botha.
